The U.S. Code organizes the general and permanent federal laws of the United States. Newly enacted laws can exist as official slip laws before they are fully reflected in the Code.

Federal regulations
Federal regulations are rules issued by federal agencies under authority granted by law. They are separate from statutes passed by Congress.
How the layers fit
Federal law: statutes that apply nationally.
Federal regulations: agency rules implementing federal law.
State law: statutes and constitutions that apply within a state.
State regulations: rules issued by state agencies.
Local law: city and county ordinances, codes, and related rules.
Accuracy note
Local code publishers can lag behind newly adopted ordinances. Always check the municipality's own site or clerk if timing matters. RECEIPTS labels publisher libraries separately from official government sources.

How we check
1. Identify the record. Bill numbers and exact official titles are stronger than fuzzy title matches.
2. Read official status. RECEIPTS checks legislative actions, titles, summaries, law records, and publication data when available.
3. Match the exact claim. House passage, Senate passage, passage by Congress, and becoming law are treated as different events.
4. Explain it simply. Plain-English wording is a summary. The linked government record remains the evidence.
Source hierarchy
For federal legislation, RECEIPTS prioritizes Congress.gov and GovInfo. GovInfo is operated by the U.S. Government Publishing Office and provides public access to official publications from all three federal branches. State and local coverage can vary, so RECEIPTS labels official government sources separately from third-party code publishers.
Important limits
RECEIPTS is not a law firm, lawyer, court, legislature, or government agency. It does not provide legal advice or predict how a court will apply a law to your situation. Records can change, newly enacted material may take time to appear in codified collections, and local publisher databases may lag newly adopted ordinances.
Privacy
This beta does not require an account. Saved Receipts are stored in your browser on this device. Questions sent for checking are processed by the site backend so it can query government records. Do not enter passwords, Social Security numbers, account numbers, or other sensitive personal information.
